Unspoiled, but not remote ...
Once an outpost reachable only by boat, Toledo is today easily accessible by car and bus along the Southern Highway -- probably the best-paved road in Belize -- or on the several daily commuter flights from Belize City.
by Tropic Air ...
Tropic Air - the official airline of the Toledo Cacao-Fest - offers five convenient daily flights from Belize City to Punta Gorda airstrip.
The 75 minute flight gives you a fabulous bird's eye view of southern Belize, flying south along the coastline with views of the Maya Mountains to your right and the beautiful cayes to your left, as well as Dangriga Town and Placencia Village.
Either book with Tropic Air on-line, contact your local travel agent, or ask your hotel to make your resrevations for you! Maya Island Air also offers three daily flights to Punta Gorda.
by car ...
Your 4-5 hour drive from Belize City takes you 50 miles along the Western Highway to the nation's capital, Belmopan, and then journey south-east along the Hummingbird Highway, winding through the foothills of the Maya Mountains. After an hour or so, you'll reach the Shell Xaibel service station - the last gas station for another hundred miles - where you turn ri
ght onto the Southern Highway for the final two hours of your journey.
The first hour brings you to the outskirts of Mango Creek/Independence, where you turn right to continue on the Southern Highway towards Toledo. The nine-mile unpaved stretch takes you through the Golden Stream Corridor Preserve, back onto the paved highway and through the village of Big Falls. At the Shell Station, turn left for the final leg of the Southern Highway, passing through the East Indian villages of Jacintoville and Forest Home, through Cattle Landing, and then along the coast road into Punta Gorda Town.
Car hire is available from Belize City through Steve Perrera at Buy-Belize.com who offers a free pick-up from the airport. Vehicle rental is also available through Crystal Autos or Budget, and locally in Toledo through IBTM Tours.
